Thanks to its location on the southwestern edge of Cape Cod, Falmouth, Massachusetts, is a popular stop among boaters traveling up and down the coast. But this town is much more than just a stopover. In fact, Falmouth represents the best of Cape Cod wrapped up in one destination.
Falmouth is known for its beautiful beaches with gorgeous views of Vineyard Sound. It is home to the Shining Sea Bikeway, a roughly 10-mile paved bike trail that offers views of breathtaking coastal scenery. The town also has plenty of history, as it was home to Katharine Lee Bates, who wrote “America the Beautiful.” In addition to its beauty and history, Falmouth is also home to a great fishing scene, wonderful restaurants and a Main Street filled with interesting boutiques. It all makes Falmouth an exceptional cruising destination in its own right.
Given its location near the Cape Cod Canal, Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound, Falmouth is at the center of the Cape’s boating scene. As a result, it is home to plenty of marine services. Bosun’s East Falmouth Marina (www.bosuns.com; 508-548-2216) is a full-service marina located on Eel Pond on a site that has operated as a boatyard since the 1800s. In Falmouth Harbor, MacDougall’s Cape Cod Marine Service (www.macdougalls.com; 508-548-3146) offers transient dockage for boats up to 150 feet, as well as a fuel dock, laundry and shower. Also in the harbor, Falmouth Marine (www.falmouthmarine.com; 508-548-4600) offers transient dockage, fuel and repairs. And the Falmouth Town Marina (http://www.falmouthmass.us/depart.php?depkey=harbor) offers transient slips for boats up to 45 feet. The slips have water, cable and electric, and pump-out is available.
While visiting the area, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the area’s spectacular fishing. If you’d rather focus on fishing and let someone else handle the boating, jump on a party boat from Patriot Party Boats (www.patriotpartyboats.com). Also, during the summer, Falmouth Marine Park has a number of concerts and free events for visitors to enjoy. Check out the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce calendar (www.falmouthchamber.com) for a full list of events.
When you get hungry, Falmouth has many excellent restaurants to choose from. Among the best is the Flying Bridge Restaurant (www.flyingbridgerestaurant.com; 508-548-2700), which offers a diverse menu, fresh seafood and wonderful views of Falmouth Harbor. Another great restaurant is the C Salt Wine Bar and Grille (www.csaltfalmouth.com; 774-763-2954), which features fine American cuisine in a comfortable setting that includes a bar area and a gorgeous patio. For delicious Italian food, La Cucina Sul Mare (www.lacucinasulmare.com; 508-548-5600) serves pastas, seafood and wine in a space with a tin ceiling and a hardwood bar.
